Procedure for the carriage of Seed Cake (including Copra Meal) in containers

Please find following requirements, with Swire Shipping, for shipment of Seed Cake. Copra meal is categorized as seed cakes. Seed cake includes type of pulp, meals, cake, pellets or expellers where oil has been removed from oil-bearing seeds, cereals or commodities with similar properties. Self‐Reacting Commodities, under certain conditions may self‐heat and ignite. It is compulsory to declare Seed Cake / Copra Cakes / Copra Meal as DG.

Seed Cake shall be transported in compliance with the requirements set out in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code). Furthermore, the following Procedure must be observed.

1. Packaging

1.Sift-proof, tear-proof bags. The maximum net mass shall adhere to section 6.1.4 of the IMDG code. (i.e. maximum net mass of 50 kg for sift proof plastic bags)

Packaging of cargo should be in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 4.1 of the IMDG Code. Copra meal should also be packed into a sift-proof, tear-proof bags. The maximum net mass shall adhere to section 6.1.4 of the IMDG code (i.e. maximum net mass of 50 kg for bags).

2. Container stuffing

  1. Dry 20ft or 40ft containers can be used. Containers shall be in a good condition and clean.
  2. The temperature of the Seed Cake to be placed inside the container should not exceed 55ºC at the time of stuffing.
  3. Maximum height of copra bags in the container to be less than 6 inches/15 cm from roof to allow proper ventilation.
  4. Container ventilation holes to be in open condition.
  5. Label as per the IMDG code requirement.

3. Documentation

  1. Multimodal Dangerous Good Declaration Form.
  2. Certificates from the shipper shall state oil content and moisture content and shall accompany the shipment.

4. On-board stowage

  1. Seed Cake shall be stowed in accordance with IMDG, SOLAS and the ship’s Document of Compliance for Carriage of Dangerous Goods as well as any requirements set by the Flag State of the ship.
  2. In all cases containers of Seed Cake should be protected from sources of heat and kept dry as reasonably practical.
